Canadians from Coast-to-Coast-to-Coast Celebrate Music Monday Online

This year, due to physical-distancing restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, Music Monday went virtual with a 12-hour broadcast called “Music Monday @ Home.” Organized by the Coalition for Music Education and held on the first Monday of May each year, Music Monday aims to shine spotlight on the quest for equitable access to quality music education in Canadian schools.

The 2020 Music Monday anthem was Oscar Peterson’s iconic “Hymn to Freedom,” with lyrics by Hariette Hamilton.

The day-long event featured a rolling series of regional broadcasts as well as: live performances; new music from the Coalition's Youth4Music Ambassadors; interactive activities for kids of all ages; messages of support from prominent Canadians; and an after-party.

Organizers acknowledge that it was important to continue the tradition of Music Monday this year, despite the challenges of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
