Bobby Shew to Join the Yamaha Canada Jazz Orchestra for Special Performance for Yamaha Canada Music's 50th Anniversary

Yamaha Canada Music will be presenting a special concert featuring the Yamaha Canada Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Rick Wilkins and featuring guest soloist Bobby Shew (pictured above). This event is part of the year-long celebrations commemorating Yamaha Canada Music’s 50th anniversary, and will take place at Walter Hall in the Edward Johnson Building at the University of Toronto on Oct. 5, 2019, at 7:30 pm.

Led by Rick Wilkins, the Yamaha Canada Jazz Orchestra is comprised of some of the foremost musicians in the country. Bobby Shew has been a mainstay of the global jazz scene since the 1960s. After a stint in the army, he moved to New York City and joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, rooming and playing with legendary Charlie Shavers. Other credits include Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Si Zentner, Benny Goodman. Bobby played and toured as lead trumpet for Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Robert Goulet, Steve Allen, Paul Anka, Connie Stevens, and Tom Jones. In 1972, he moved to Los Angeles and became a first-call studio musician.

“Bringing together this group of musicians has been an incredible experience, and we can’t wait to see them on stage,” says Geoff Houghton, product marketing manager for Yamaha Winds. “It’s an honour to have the legendary Bobby Shew help us celebrate our 50th anniversary. Rick Wilkins is one of the elder statesmen of Canadian jazz, and this concert is going to be a once-in-a-lifetime event that everyone needs to hear.”

In addition to celebrating Yamaha Canada’s 50th anniversary, the concert is also the official Canadian launch of the new Bobby Shew Trumpet, model YTR8310ZII.
