Al Jarreau to Receive 2016 Frankfurt Music Prize

Renowned international jazz, pop and rhythm-and-blues musician Al Jarreau is to be honoured with the Frankfurt Music Prize 2016. This award goes to personalities who have made a particularly significant contribution to the worldwide music and culture scene and is presented annually during Musikmesse, the International Trade Fair for Musical Instruments, Sheet Music, Music Production and Music Business Connections in Frankfurt, Germany.The presentation ceremony will be held in the ‘Kaisersaal’ (Imperial Hall) of the ‘Römer’ (Frankfurt Town Hall) on April 8, 2016. During the ceremony, the artist will appear live on stage and offer insights into his musical oeuvre.

The Frankfurt Music Prize is given in recognition of Al Jarreau’s lifetime of work as a seminal vocalist. In its explanatory statement, the jury emphasised his outstanding interpretative and improvisational abilities with which he has elevated the solo singing voice to previously unknown heights.

Al Jarreau

Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1940, Al Jarreau is one of the leading singers of contemporary jazz and has released more than 20 albums in the course of his career. Jarreau become a household name through hit singles such as ‘We’re in This Love Together’ and ‘Moonlighting’. He has also been internationally successful with his interpretations of works by Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, and other stars of the jazz scene. Characteristic of Jarreau is the broad spectrum of singing techniques he employs and the extensive compass of his voice – from deep bass to high flageolet tones. During a musical career ranging over more than five decades, he has been the recipient of many of the sector’s most important awards. To date, he is the only singer to have been presented with a coveted Grammy Award in the 3 categories of jazz, pop and rhythm & blues. He was honoured with a gold star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’ in Los Angeles in 2001.
